The final book - Uma and The Forest

Its all printed out and looking flash :)

Feedback from Wellington Library

Feedback – Wellington City Library

The Book
-       Great illustrations!
-       There are definitely similar books around that include encouragement in helping others but none that include accessories
-       The whole package would be great for story times at the library.
-       Could you consider a ‘parents page’ that talked about why it is important for make believe and imaginative play? Like sending a little informative message. Also include a ‘how to’ for parents i.e. how to use this pack for 3-4 year olds, 5-6 etc?
-       If the book could have a hard cover and plastic pages that would be ideal for long wear and tear.
-       Could there be a Maori story when you make more stories? There is a real gap in the market for interactive Maori stories with accessories especially.
-       Wellington people love to back things that share in their story so what about a Wellington themed book or aspect? Also this will tighten the market for that product.

The whole package
-       We would definitely stock this here! For renting out and to use.
-       From a library perspective it needs to be durable as well as a quality product.
-       Agree with the alternative ribbon idea instead of elastic as it could be brighter and more engaging and also will wear better.
-       Could you add a soft toy to the extra accessories?
-       Very impressed by the design and the quality.
-       Could you get it scotch guarded?
-       Could you change the colour of the bag as it’s very light and would get dirty quickly.

Marketing
-       Could you create a social media character for Uma? Like Uma went for a bike ride today as an example and have a little picture? That’s a fun way for people to keep interested and follow alone.
-       Have you looked into Unity Books and Children’s Bookshop in Kilbirnie? They sell good quality products and always-stock creative pieces.
-       Moore Wilson is also somewhere to stock it.
-       How would the library stock this on the shelves? Could it be boxed so all the pieces can stay together in a way that best represents the product? Otherwise the library might put it in a plastic container with a label etc. Then we can add information, ID numbers etc in a good place on the box.
-       When it comes to your pitch and selling the product pitch it to places that will buy it in bulk! Like libraries so then the smaller individual sales will come later once you made a lot of the money and where a smaller income won’t effect the process of getting more.
-       Could you offer bulk buying places to buy 10 and get a discount?
-       For publishers look in Gecko and Book Island.
-       Libraries will love to buy. In-home childcare? They will have ‘toy kits’ and this product would go great in those. Wellington has a Nanny College look into that too.
-       Advertising your product through the story time section of the library would be a cheap way of getting the product out there.
-       If you did crowd funding could you offer that if you raised a certain amount you would donate a bunch to hospitals? Or schools?

Overall the product is great and we would definitely stock it here! Keep us in the loop if anything happens J

Feedback from Capital E

Feedback from Karen – Capital E

The book –
       -     The story is great and very creative.
-       Keep the end open! Don’t make too many suggestions, as kids will stick to them rather than being creative.
-       Let the child decide what they would do with the play cloth and kit at the end.
-       If you keep it open it will be challenging for children and they also thrive when it comes to challenges.
-       Illustrations are great. Very captivating and great use of colour.
-       Very unisex which is spot on.
-       Maybe try keeping the sentences shorter? Especially when it comes to descriptions e.g. mums rose bush and dads apple tree just pick one.
-       Use of repetition is great!!
-       What about trying to get kids to really interact with the book as well as the play cloth and dress up?
-       Such as the reader could ask the kids ‘what can you find?’, sounding out the rustling leaves (use different fonts), encourage kids to do actions such as the bear has his hands in the air so they should to, ‘what is this sound?’, kids will remember and enjoy the ‘Oo, Ah, Ee!’ so encourage them to say this too.
-       The things above could be represented in different fonts, or with the use of italics? Or with small suggestions at the bottom of the page.
-       The book has great morals for kids to follow.
-       Allow the kids to get physical and interactive with the story – on the page where the snake slithers how about encouraging the kids to do this as well?

It would be awesome to test this product with the children from the age group and ask them about the book etc. What would they like to see on the page Uma takes the play cloth and starts getting creative?

The play cloth –
-       Such a good size! Not to big that one child can’t carry it but big enough to really create some cool structures and forts.
-       The elastic is good for attaching to objects but what about attaching things to it?
-       The polo fleece should be a brighter colour like the colours in the print.
-       What about if you introduced colour ribbons instead of the elastic?  They would be safer in terms of health and safety and they would be more interactive for attaching to objects and attaching things to the play cloth. Ribbons would probably be less problematic in terms of wearing etc as well.
-       What if the corners were more triangular and long? So they could be tied around things and a little more ‘wizardy’ and ‘magical’
-       If the corners were like the above you could have less ribbon attachments maybe just a couple in the middle of each side.
-       The fabric choices are great! Especially bringing the print in from the book. Parents will love that it is machine washable.

The dress up + bag –
-       The accessories are great! They will really allow the children to be a part of the story and be fully immersed in the activities they do.
-       The hat/head piece is perfect.
-       The drawstring bag is great as it doesn’t take up much space so will be easy to store and take places.

Overall it is a great idea and there is definitely a market open for this! It would be awesome to trial this at Capital E to see how the kids interacted with it and if it was something a facility like this could do with in stock. Capital E would also be a great place to ask the kids about the aesthetics of the book and whether they like it.

I would suggest aiming your product at 3-6 year olds. At 3 kids are very imaginative and playful and as they grow up into 6 year olds they become very self-aware.  3-6 year olds explore in very different ways to 7 year olds.

In terms of advertising ‘The Parent Show’ would be great for marketing this product and online in stores. Parents shop A LOT online these days. This product would even be a great gift for a 2nd birthday so they can grow with it and it will last a long time.

It is definitely interactive play.

As a mum I would definitely buy this product and roughly at a price of $80-$100 price bracket.
